Yeah but if you're serious you're going to have to take the plunge at something. Also these days you're very rarely "screwed" as long as you have a degree in something.
yeh, thats what i meant
But I also meant, that if you get the degree and you still lack the neccessary talent, your screwed.

Thanks for the adivce, everyone. I'll defently consider now but it's a long way off (I only 15)

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Maybe its different in your part of the world, or maybe its different when it comes to film school rather than a more traditional degree. But here in the UK at least a degree means jackshit thanks to the government watering them down. You can get 3 Es at 6 form and still go to a "university" and come out with the same qualifiction. The number of unemplyed people with degrees is getting bigger and bigger due the numbrs getting degress rising but the number of jobs requiring it staying the same.Originally posted by Generic Skinhead:

Film school is a very specialist field so maybe it differs. But i just wanted to bring youre attention to the thousands of kids that come out of uni with shit loads of debt and have nothing to show for it. Yes degrees can screw you over.
LOL-"My part of the world" ie the Republic. Just next door.
Well over here (for now) third level is relatively free. So Irish people's debt out of college is nothing compared to english students.
My point about degrees is if you have one, its easy to a post grad in something. A degree in film then say a post grad in journalism or something.
A degree gives you something to build on-it shouldnt stop there. If the film thing doesnt work, just go back and do something else.
But if you're talented you really should make it, and if you're not, well, you shouldnt be thinking of going to film school should you?
If people learned to do what theyre good at rather then what they'd like to be good at, the world would be a better place.
I accept not everyone in film school is superb, and you can't always know if you'll be good, but its the same in any course you do.
Theres no sure things in life, man.

I personally dont think Film School is a good idea.
But saying this, I should also add that I've never been, and that this is just my opinion.
Like Belovedmonster says, degrees can count for jackshit over here, and with a degree in film theres really not much scope for you to work in. So if you fail, you are'nt exactly 'screwed', but theres a chance you will be.
Theres a good deal of snobbery in employment these days, and if you can youd be better off getting a good degree in english at some posh uni, then flashing 'edinburgh' or 'st andrews' off to the bbc.
1. Not all schools are the same - some are pathetic waste of time, some are money and time well spent.
2.What do you want out of the school - do they offer it?
3. Are you gonna work hard while there and meet the school half way or beyond, or waste away your nights on Playstation 2
4. I dunno bout anywhere else, but in America, I think going for Masters degree to be able to also teach film in college is the way to go.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Maybe im biased becos im going to York which arguably the best uni outside Oxbridge but i dont think its snobbery really. Who would you rather employ... the straight A student who got into a "posh" uni like Oxbridge, Warwick, Durham, York.... or the kid who got straight Cs and went to an average uni?Theres a good deal of snobbery in employment these days, and if you can youd be better off getting a good degree in english at some posh uni, then flashing 'edinburgh' or 'st andrews' off to the bbc.
Fact is most of the BBC peeps are from Oxbridge becos they are the best young minds in the country. Why would the BBC pick Joe Average when they can have the best the country?
University is like a seal of quality. If you did your degree at a top university it means you are a top class student.
Yeh- true
Didnt think about that
